Introduction

The National General Certificate is the most widely held health and safety qualification in the UK with over 100,000 people having gained the award since it was launched in 1989.

Managers, supervisors and staff from all types of organisations who need a broad understanding of health and safety issues. The certificate helps them manage risks effectively and gives them a good foundation in Health & Safety. Many people take the NEBOSH National General Certificate as a first step in a career in health and safety. It provides a valuable overview, and is a sound basis for further professional study.

Course Outcome

The NEBOSH National General Certificate covers the main legal requirements for health and safety in the UK, identification and control of workplace hazards, and the practical application of this knowledge. 

Course Syllabus

The qualification is divided into three units, each of which is assessed separately: 

  • Management of Health and Safety (NGC1) 

1. Foundations in health & safety

2. Policy

3. Organising for health & safety

4. Promoting a positive health & safety culture

5. Risk assessment

6. Principles of control

7. Monitoring review and audit

8. Incident and accident    

  • Controlling workplace hazards (NGC2)

1. Movement of people and vehicles

2. Manual and mechanical handling

3. Working equipment hazards and control

4. Electrical hazards and control

5. Fire hazards and control

6. Chemical and biological health

7. Physical and psychological health

8. Construction activities                        

  • Health and safety practical application (NGC3)

The syllabus is mapped to the National Occupational Standards for Health and Safety owned by ENTO. 

Summary

No previous health and safety knowledge is required but candidates should note the assessment includes a requirement to write a short report and they must undertake 2 two hour written exams.
